FVO Urban Series

Each Urban event in our summer series has a Short (usually 2-4km optimal distance) and Long course (usually 3-5km optimal distance). It's likely that under 16s will require an adult who is prepared to take responsibility for safe road crossings on the Short and Long courses at most urban events. Please check with the organiser whether this applies in this event. There may also be a traffic-free course suitable for solo juniors at some urban events..

All courses are suitable for beginners and families to do together, ask at registration if you would like advice on map symbols, which are slightly different for urban than for forest orienteering.

Results from this series of events are used for league placings. The series was previously called Sprint, however has been rebranded as Urban to make it clearer to newcomers that sprinting is optional (i.e. many club members walk, jog or run these courses).

Local event

Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.

Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!

Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Directions & Parking

The Bannockburn West map is to the SW side of the A9 and the event assembly area should be approached on foot. There is on-street parking on or near Park Drive or Firs Entry/Morrison Drive (both accessible from the A9 roundabout) at https://maps.app.goo.gl/AgLZnVEgrqb8yHxh7 or https://what3words.com/avoid.older.shaky Registration/assembly: The event is based where the footpath crosses the Bannock Burn, https://maps.app.goo.gl/2FGYtX5Y5DJHYZZW6 or https://what3words.com/turns.fuel.magic

Map & Terrain

Map is 1:4,000, 2.5m contours, mapped by Graham Gristwood 2021 with minor updates 2025. There are some out of bounds areas indicated on the map with purple hashing. There has also been major construction work (a new housing estate) with further work still ongoing. These areas (ie new houses and muddy fenced off fields) are both shown on the map as a large area of purple shading (out of bounds). As with other urban events – features marked on the map as uncrossable/impassable must not be crossed, even if you might be capable of doing so.

Terrain is very varied with some housing estate, parkland, open countryside (rough and overgrown in places), as well as the Bannock Burn valley. Courses have been planned to avoid routes through the large bramble thickets!. The river should only be crossed at the bridges. The paths/terrain may be slippery/muddy in places when wet, and a few minor paths near the river may be slightly overgrown.

Safety Notes

Please note that the Junior/Novice course does briefly (twice) visit short sections of dead-end road, so there is a possibility that slow-moving traffic may be encountered. Parents/guardians please make sure your children are aware to watch out for traffic if on the road, as they may not have had traffic at all when attending other races in the series

The area includes some muddy footpaths, visited by all courses, and on occasion these are quite close to the banks of the Bannock Burn. Please take care!
