FVO Urban Series
Each Urban event in our summer series has a Short (usually 2-4km optimal distance) and Long course (usually 3-5km optimal distance). It's likely that under 16s will require an adult who is prepared to take responsibility for safe road crossings on the Short and Long courses at most urban events. Please check with the organiser whether this applies in this event. There may also be a traffic-free course suitable for solo juniors at some urban events..
All courses are suitable for beginners and families to do together, ask at registration if you would like advice on map symbols, which are slightly different for urban than for forest orienteering.
Results from this series of events are used for league placings. The series was previously called Sprint, however has been rebranded as Urban to make it clearer to newcomers that sprinting is optional (i.e. many club members walk, jog or run these courses).
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Directions & Parking
Parking is available to the North West at Linden Avenue Car Park (550m; operated by Stirling Council, charges may apply) or on street locally. Please park considerately as this is a residential area and avoid parking/walking through the competition area as you arrive. Please enter Braehead Park from the north.
Map & Terrain
- 1:4,000, 2.5m contour interval, Graham Gristwood (2020) and revised for this event.
- This is classic Scottish housing estate with an abundance of small alleyways offering plenty of route choice. All courses are 100% urban, with just a few small areas of short cut grass and grass verges.
- No loose control descriptions available, these will be printed on the map and made available on the FVO website.
- As with other urban events – features marked on the map as uncrossable/impassable must not be crossed, even if you might be capable of doing so.
Course Information
| Course | Optimal Distance | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Junior | 1.6km | 13 |
| Short | 3.0km | 14 |
| Long | 4.0km | 20 |
Long and Short courses both cross moderately busy roads. Under 16s MUST be shadowed on these courses. The long course has a map flip. There is no climb on any course.
Parents/guardians should be aware that the Junior course is not traffic free. However, following a risk assessment it has been deemed the risk to participants from traffic is minimal so that juniors do not need to be shadowed. The area used for the junior courses can be seen here (yellow outline).
This area contains cul-de-sac parking areas so there may be some slow moving traffic; but there are no through roads. The junior course has been planned to minimise crossing these parking areas. In case of any concern you are welcome to contact the organiser prior to the event for more information; the junior course map will be available to inspect before starting; and of course, juniors can still be shadowed where necessary.

Safety Notes
- Please be considerate of other members of the public and take special care when crossing roads. Particular care should be taken to watch out for children who may be out playing/cycling on the predominantly quiet roads and parks.
- The area has lots of blind corners and narrow alleyways. As well as the general public and cyclists, there will be lots of other orienteers present. Please be very mindful of your pace to avoid collisions and to let others pass. Competitors should plan for the weather and dress accordingly.
- Whilst a risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser, participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. Any participants with relevant pre-existing medical conditions which might affect their participation should disclose them to the race organisers before they start.
