Forth Valley Orienteers

FVO Night Series

Night Events run on a regular basis through the dark winter nights.

The events will provide some great orienteering and merit top billing in your diary! There will be three courses provided - a longer TD5 course, a TD5 short course, and an easier Orange/Light Green course (where possible). The easier course is intended for people who have some day orienteering experience and who wish to try night orienteering, however remember that even Orange courses are more difficult at night-time! The courses may be gaffled to provide additional challenge.

Juniors (those who have not had their 16th birthday) may not compete independently of an adult in Night races unless (a) they have successfully completed three daytime races at TD5 standard, and (b) they have successfully completed two Night races with an experienced shadow, at either Long or Short level (novice courses don't count). The Night series co-ordinator will be able to advise which juniors are included in this.

Local event

Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.

Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!

Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Directions & Parking

The area is King’s Park which contains Stirling Golf Course in Stirling. Assembly and Finish is at what3words ///admire.oppose.hung which is at the parterre and (former) drinking fountain near the main entrance. Ordnance Survey – NS 791 929. Stirling railway and bus stations are a 15 min walk from assembly area; use FVO mail or WhatsApp Group if you need help. There is parking available along a track adjacent to the SE edge of the Park. Note the track is one way going SW (unless you are a cyclist) and entry is from the northeast most roundabout by the Park main entrance. Take care as turning at this roundabout is an unusual manoeuvre and other motorists may not expect this.

Map & Terrain

Map: 1:4,000, 2.5m contour interval, mapped by Graham Gristwood some time ago. Some updates have been done where they are near control sites. Some paths shown as intermittent may well be invisible on the ground. Golf Club machinery has made some extra unmapped tracks that may be noticed due to the wet weather

Terrain: The area consists of an 18-hole golf course surrounded by a gravel track. Around the periphery are cliffs and areas of bracken and brambles. The bracken has died down, but not the brambles. See final details for more info.

Course Information

  • Long: about 7km, some climb, TD4/5
  • Short: about 5km, less climb. TD4/5
  • Dark Orange (novice): 2.2k, about the same climb. TD3

Registration & Start times

Mass start 18:30. It may be possible to arrange punching starts after the mass start.

Facilities

The King’s Park public toilets will not be open at the time of the event, so please plan accordingly. The nearest available toilets are probably at the railway station.

Safety Notes

Headlamp, spare torch and whistle are compulsory. You may be asked to carry a waterproof jacket on the night, depending on the weather. The courses are all within the Park and so there are no road crossings. There may be an occasional cyclist, hopefully with lights. There will be dogs being taken for a walk – they often have illuminated collars.
