Forth Valley Orienteers

Local event

Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.

Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!

Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Directions & Parking

The event centre will be held at the entrance to the path entering the wood, at the sharp turn in Ochilview.

Parking is tight in Cowie, with very limited on-street parking on Ochilview, close to the event. Ideally this should only be used by those with small children and/or mobility problems; for most competitors, we have arranged parking at Cowie Primary School (W3W ///using.crossing.blotting), which is roughly 10 minutes’ steady walk away along the pavement alongside Mount Oliphant and Ochilview.

Map & Terrain

All Courses: Map scale 1:5,000, Contours 2.5m. ISOM 2017-2 - 150%. The Blue course has a map flip. All courses are printed on A4 paper.

There are no marked out of bounds areas on the map, but please be aware that the “swamp” between the main body of the map and the hill to the west – which was perfectly dry and navigable 2 weeks ago – may be very soggy on the day of the event, in which case cross on the south side, along the fence. Check on the day.

There is a large new fence along one of the major paths, and we would ask that anyone crossing it during their course do so at the marked crossing point, at which the landowner has very kindly offered to erect a stile for us.

Course Information

Provisional courses are as follows:

Yellow: 1.6km, 30m climb, 8 controls, one taped section

Orange: 2.1km, 50m climb, 9 controls

Light Green: 2.7km, 60m climb, 13 controls

Green: 3.6km, 65m climb, 16 controls

Blue: 5.5km, 85m climb, 22 controls (includes map flip)

The terrain is varied, with some heavy going in the centre balanced with beautifully runnable open woodland to both the west and east. Full leg cover is essential.

Registration & Start times

Registration will be at the assembly area; the Start and Finish are located a further short walk into the woodland and will be signposted.

Start Times 11am-1pm. Course closes at 2.30pm

Facilities

There are no public toilets at the event, nor any in Cowie that I can see that will be open on a Sunday morning, alas!

Safety Notes

1. The main safety risk lies in the numerous barbed wire topped fences. Courses have been planned to avoid these, use gates or cross where the fences are broken. One big new fence has been erected and is marked on the map; if you need to cross it, please only do so at the stile that the landowner has kindly provided for us.

4. Please be aware of other woodland users. The area is not particularly popular with dog walkers or bikers, but – as always – please be courteous to any non-orienteers you encounter.

6. Ticks can be present in any forest area, even this late in the year. All participants are advice to check for ticks. Advice on how remove them can be found here

7.  A comprehensive risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

8. You have the option of downloading, completing and handing this Medical Form to the Organiser (via Registration) so that existing medical conditions are known about in the event of an incident. Please put in a sealed envelope with your name on it. It will only be opened if required and will be destroyed unread if you don't collect before the end of the event.

9. Everyone must download at the finish, whether or not you have completed the course.
