FVO Wednesday Evening Series
Local series of forest orienteering events running from Easter until the summer holidays.
Four courses offered:
- Yellow - (1.5km to 2km). Relatively simple navigation, mostly on paths. Searching for obvious features like path junctions and stream crossings.
- Orange - (2km to 3km). Slightly tougher navigation, which may take you off paths. Searching for features like boulders and tree stumps.
- Green - (3.5km to 5km). Tough navigation, off path and searching for more obscure features, such as depressions and re-entrants.
- Short Green - (3km to 4km). A shortened version of the Green course - just as tough, but less distance.
Start times: 1730-1900
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Overview
In a change to our normal WEE format, and to work around the tide times at Bo'ness, this event will have a single mass start at 1830 for the Green and Short Green courses. Both courses will be gaffled to avoid everyone following each other - it's like one of our night events, except in broad daylight! (And if you don't like mass starts you can start a few minutes after everyone else.)
For the Orange and Yellow courses we don't need to worry about the tides, so competitors on these courses can start anytime between 1730 and 1900 as usual.
Safety Note - there are no trains scheduled, but please exercise caution when crossing the railway track. Only use the marked crossing points and look both ways; children of primary-school age must be accompanied when crossing.

Directions & Parking
There is a tiny car park at ///tasks.contacts.croak - please do not park in the car park but on the north side of the street adjacent where there is plenty of space. Then use the entrance from the car park to the foreshore to find the registration and start.
No real public transport options, so please try to share lifts where possible.
Map & Terrain
Map is 1:4000 with 2.5m contours.
Terrain is mainly open grassland with some areas of woodland - trail shoes will be a better choice of footwear than metal dobs. Some of the woodland is full of brambles so the courses have been planned to avoid those areas. The longer courses head out onto a small 'island' with excellent views across the Forth to Fife.
Course Information
- Green - 4,4km
- Short Green - 3.1km
- Orange - 1.9km
- Yellow - 1.1km
Green and Short Green course will be gaffled - this means everyone visits the same controls, but not in the same order. (From the Swedish word 'gaffel' meaning fork.) You still follow the order of controls on your map as normal, but don't expect everyone on your course to be going the same way as you.
Entry Details
Registration & Start times
Competitors on Green and Short Green course should arrive in time for a roll call and map distribution at 1820 so that we can hold the mass start at 1830. Anyone who misses the mass start will be able to get a punching start after 1830 (but before last start at 1900).
Competitors on Orange and Yellow courses can start as usual anytime between 1730 and 1900.
All courses close at 2000 and you must report to download at the Finish, even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are safe.
Facilities
Nearest toilets are at either of the supermarkets in Bo'ness.
Safety Notes
All courses cross the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway line via 3 crossing points which are marked on the map. There will be no trains running on the day, but you must only use the marked crossing points to cross the track, and do check in both directions before crossing just in case. There are no road crossings so U16s do not need to be shadowed.
The Green and Short Green courses both cross a narrow muddy inlet to get onto an 'island' beyond. It will be low tide while you're running but you must still use the marked crossing points at either end of the inlet to get onto the island.
First Aid will be at the Finish.
