Limerigg WestSun 16 Aug
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Officials' Reports
Apologies to anyone who downloaded early on but the download unit died, however hopefully you do have your printed out splits to compare results. You can also upload your results to Livelox and see other people’s times.

Directions & Parking
Parking will be on the streets in Limerigg (Slammanan Road, Lochside Road). PLEASE be considerate to the locals - don't park across driveways etc, and please ensure your vehicle is not left on bends on other places that may cause a safety problem.
If at all possible then car share to minimise the number of vehicles as it is a very small village with limited space.
Map & Terrain
The map was made by Alistair Pedley in 2025, and has only been used once before. This is its first outing at 1:7,500 scale.
We are staying west of the road where the forest is most runnable. Its relatively flat so no evil climbs and although the forest areas may look impenetrable from the paths once you are in them they are actually rather nice mostly with one direction which is faster running than others. The path network is constantly evolving including a number of "motorcross" trails over individual terrain features which have not been mapped.
The vegetation is good for this time of year in Scotland - but green hatching will be tough going. There may be some unmapped undergrowth flourishing in other areas but all controls can be accessed without fighting through brambles or head high nettles. Full leg cover is mandatory though - as with all British Forest Orienteering events.
The overprint does not use the ISOM standard circle size to help with clarity. Control circles are 8mm diameter (60m on the ground). Some lines linking controls on the yellow course have been bent for clarity.
Course Information
The usual range of courses will be offered. Note the distances are straight line distances and it is likely the fastest routes require longer runs, and many will opt for route choices which could add 30-40%.
| Course | Distance (km) | Climb (m) | Controls |
| Yellow (TD2) | 2.2 | 35 | 10 |
| Orange (TD3) | 2.5 | 35 | 10 |
| Light Green (TD4) | 3.7 | 70 | 10 |
| Green (TD5) | 4.7 | 85 | 13 |
| Blue (TD5) | 5.6 | 90 | 14 |
Yellow and Orange
You will leave the path network: following ditches, fences, earth walls, very obvious vegetation boundaries etc. These are actually more obvious than following the complex paths in places but parents will want to consider if shadowing is necessary.

Registration & Start times
Stars people will be training in the area before the event. Starts are 11:00-13:00. The entry system allocated start blocks to spread people out, but they do not need to be stuck to religiously. Please allow at least 1 minute between anyone else running the same course. The courses quickly split up into different directions so you can start at the same time as people on other courses.
Courses close 15:00.
Facilities
Toilets, changing (please remember there are young people around), first aid, download etc will be provided at the Village hall (until 2pm). Refreshments may be provided by the village hall volunteers.
Safety Notes
Other users
As always there may be dog walkers, runners, cyclists in the area. The locality is popular with horse riders so please be aware of them both on your course and driving in. Parts of the forest are used by motorcross riders - you can usually hear them before you see them - they may not be expecting people to run across paths etc.
Fences
Most of the fences are barbed wire. Two protected crossing points [shown with purple )( on the map] have been provided, but you can cross the fence anywhere at your own discretion.
Abandoned vehicle
There is an abandoned car with broken windows which competitors on Green, Blue and possibly Light Green may encounter. Please give it a wide berth.
Dog restrictions
Green and Blue courses will enter a field which is sometimes used for grazing sheep. If taking a dog with you the landowner requires them to be on a lead.
