Forth Valley Orienteers

FallinSun 22 Jun

Local event

Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.

Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!

Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Map & Terrain

Control Descriptions

1:5000 ISSOM-2019, with 2.5m contours.  Drawn by Graham Gristwood 2015, with recent updates by Joe Hudd.

Fallin Bing is a former colliery spoil heap; now a nature reserve and popular spot for walking and wildlife. The area is centred on a 25m high gently sloping hill with a good path network. Underfoot is a patchwork of rough open grassland and mixed woodland of varying height and age. Going is relatively fast with good visibility across most of the area. Yellow and Orange courses stay entirely on the bing.

Adjacent to the bing is Wester Moss – a raised peat bog – surrounded by a narrow corridor of mature, pathless mixed woodland containing subtle features. Though the raised bog will be entirely out of bounds, Blue and Green courses will enter the surrounding woodland. This terrain provides an interesting navigational challenge as courses will be designed to reward those participants confident and skilled enough to accurately execute more direct routes. The light green course will enter this terrain, but only briefly.
