FVO Night Series
Night Events run on a regular basis through the dark winter nights.
The events will provide some great orienteering and merit top billing in your diary! There will be three courses provided - a longer TD5 course, a TD5 short course, and an easier Orange/Light Green course (where possible). The easier course is intended for people who have some day orienteering experience and who wish to try night orienteering, however remember that even Orange courses are more difficult at night-time! The courses may be gaffled to provide additional challenge.
Juniors (those who have not had their 16th birthday) may not compete independently of an adult in Night races unless (a) they have successfully completed three daytime races at TD5 standard, and (b) they have successfully completed two Night races with an experienced shadow, at either Long or Short level (novice courses don't count). The Night series co-ordinator will be able to advise which juniors are included in this.
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Map & Terrain
Map scale 1:7,500 Map revised and extended Nov 2025 by G Gristwood and Y Bertrand. The area consists of the volcanic Caile Mullach hill, a Scandinavian-type runnable wooded hill with complex contours and features (previously used for the 2016 Junior European Cup and a Scottish Orienteering League race in 2017), and two new areas: (i) the adjoining golf course, on a convex hillside with fast runnable fairways separated by areas of intricate woodland, and (ii) a small volcanic hill at the southern tip of the map, with runnable deciduous woodland.
Summer bracken and vegetation is dying down, but there remains slow undergrowth in places and leg protection of your choice is recommended and mandatory. There are occasional small crags on Long and Short courses, which can be avoided. A burn that bisects the golf course is normally easily crossable (Long & Short courses only; Novice course uses footbridges).
Course Information
Long 4.5 km, 175 m climb, TD5, estimated winning time 33 minutes
Short 3.1 km, 140 m climb, TD5, estimated winning time 36 minutes
Novice 1.4 km, 50 m climb, Orange difficulty: Exclusively on the golf course; most controls are on or near line features such as paths or golf fairways.

Safety Notes
The main greens (of which all 18 are shown as olive ovals with a black border) are closed for the winter, because they are easily damaged by footprints especially if there is frost. Golfers must instead use smaller winter greens, which are crossable and are marked with red or yellow flags. Flags have been removed from the main greens. Therefore, if you come across a very finely mown and smooth area of grass without a flag at its centre, IT IS A MAIN GREEN AND MUST NOT BE CROSSED. Courses have been planned to avoid main greens as far as possible.
A few sizeable winter greens are shown for navigation purposes, as olive green, and can be identified by their central flags. Most winter greens are not shown on the map.
Tees (black/olive rectangles or form lines) and bunkers (small black/white circles) are also out of bounds. Tees are usually obvious on the ground as platforms and there is no advantage in crossing them; go around them instead.
