FVO Urban Series
Each Urban event in our summer series has a Short (usually 2-4km optimal distance) and Long course (usually 3-5km optimal distance). It's likely that under 16s will require an adult who is prepared to take responsibility for safe road crossings on the Short and Long courses at most urban events. Please check with the organiser whether this applies in this event. There may also be a traffic-free course suitable for solo juniors at some urban events..
All courses are suitable for beginners and families to do together, ask at registration if you would like advice on map symbols, which are slightly different for urban than for forest orienteering.
Results from this series of events are used for league placings. The series was previously called Sprint, however has been rebranded as Urban to make it clearer to newcomers that sprinting is optional (i.e. many club members walk, jog or run these courses).
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Overview
Urban/Sprint style event on the map kindly loaned by Masterplan.
Culross is a quaint little area with very old buildings, narrow lanes and passages - all the stuff we love for sprint orienteering. Unfortunately someone built the village on a steep hill so your legs may be screaming by the end but if you take a moment to pause for breath at the "top" there are some impressive views across the forth, and at this distance the twinkling lights of Grangemouth in the background look almost fairytale like!

Directions & Parking
The start will be at the EAST car park. This may be different from events hosted by KFO or others in the past.
Map & Terrain
Hilly! Cobbly! Uneven, steep medieval steps, paved and unpaved surfaces with a couple of off-path bits. Its the antidote to modern University campus orienteering! Thanks to Masterplan Adventure for giving us access to the map. I've just managed to get a Junior course in without real traffic - but please read the notes / consult the map to decide if its suitable for YOUR child to run alone.
Course Information
| Course | Straight line | "Optimal" | Climb | No controls |
| Junior | 1.5 km | 2.1 km | 0 m | 13 |
| Short | 2.5 km | 3.8 km | 125 m | 14 |
| Long | 3.3 km | 5.0 km | 185 m | 20 |
Junior course is TD3 - i.e. it is harder than a typical yellow course in the forest. Inevitably it does not have any really complex route choice problems but adults who don't fancy the climb on the other courses are of course welcome to run the Junior course.
Anyone under 16 on the day MUST be shadowed by a responsible adult if running the Short or Long course. The Junior course does not require shadowing - it remains south of the "main" road through the village. However it will cross driveways and some very minor side roads. If you are in any doubt about your child's abilty to read the map and know where the "out of bounds" boundary for the main road is - please shadow them, although it is a 20mph the sight lines are terrible, busses use it and it is not kid friendly!
Entry Details
Registration & Start times
NOTE: first starts will be 1800 (for permissions reasons). Courses will close 1930 (so we can collect control before darkness)
Facilities
First aid at S/F. Plenty of free parking at S/F. If it is raining heavily we will have a tent.
There do not appear to be any public toilets nearby.
Safety Notes
See course information for shadowing.
All courses have the usual risks of dogs, cyclists, pedestrians, cars etc. Please use pavements where provided.
There are many rough paths, cobbly streets, uneven steps etc - thats why people come here - but that does introduce extra hazards for runners.
Route choices may mean runners approach the same control in opposite directions - its not the world champs we don't have control guards, remember to look where you are going!
Dog restrictions
None

There is one gate on the map which is sometimes locked. It is marked with a purple boundary line and must not be crossed even if unlocked at the time. At least when juniors are running it will be marshalled to prevent mistaken use.
