FVO Wednesday Evening Series

Local series of forest orienteering events running from Easter until the summer holidays.

Four courses offered:

  • Yellow - (1.5km to 2km). Relatively simple navigation, mostly on paths. Searching for obvious features like path junctions and stream crossings.
  • Orange - (2km to 3km). Slightly tougher navigation, which may take you off paths. Searching for features like boulders and tree stumps.
  • Green - (3.5km to 5km). Tough navigation, off path and searching for more obscure features, such as depressions and re-entrants.
  • Short Green - (3km to 4km). A shortened version of the Green course - just as tough, but less distance.

Start times: 1730-1900

Entries for all WEEs will be taken through the FVO entry system.

Local event

Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.

Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!

Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Map & Terrain

1 :7500, Contour Interval 5m, 2021 by Ben Mitchell & Martin Bagness. Updated 2024 by Alasdair Pedley. See FVO Mapped Areas.

Courses use the part of the map west of the minor road that crosses the area. Yellow & Orange courses are entirely within the lower wooded section west of assembly. Green & Short Green courses are divided 50:50 between open hill in the north and woods to the south.

On the open ground (Green/Short Green only) gorse is mapped as impenetrable vegetation or undergrowth:walk only where it would impede progress. There are many small, scattered gorse bushes prominent on the ground but unmapped. Prominent boulders are all mapped, but you may encounter smaller unmapped boulders and small areas of unmapped bare rock.

Power lines have been removed from the map.

Green & Short Green courses twice cross a fence on the boundary between open and woodland areas. This will not present a problem to most competitors, however there is one point in the fence where a fallen tree happens to make crossing much easier. This is marked as a non-mandatory crossing point.

No loose control descriptions available, these will be printed on the map and made available on this page to print out if you wish.

SPORTIdent will be used. Touch free punching will be activated – except for start and finish.

Entry Details

Via the FVO entry system. Guaranteed entries close 10am on Tuesday 5th May. Late entries will be available until maps runs out.

Registration & Start times

There will be TWO starts for this event – please read carefully!

Yellow and Orange courses both start very close to assembly. Green & Short Green courses have an alternate ‘high start’ - 800m / 120m climb from assembly along a very good, wide, even path of consistent gradient. Please allow 10-20 minutes. We appreciate long walks to the start are not always welcome – but this means the higher open ground can be easily accessed without adding all that climb to the courses. This is why courses have much less climb than usual for the area. There will be clear and check units at both starts.

Entrants on Green/Short Green should collect their map from registration where they will be given instructions on how to reach the start. Maps will be folded and sealed to obscure the course. In the interest of fair play, maps must remain sealed until you punch the start unit – spot checks will take place!

Start times 1730 to 1900. Courses close 2000. All participants MUST report to the finish by 2000 regardless of whether you finish the course. Due to the high start, Green/Short Green maps will not be issued after 1850 – but we will endeavour to open registration from 1710 for the collection of Green/Short Green maps so that early runners can reach the start from 1730.

Finish for all courses is close to assembly - 150m / 20m climb.

Facilities

There are no toilets at the event, so please plan accordingly. The nearest available public toilets are at Station Road car park.

There will be someone at assembly for the duration of the event and a covered area to leave any kit (at your own risk).

There will be a qualified first aider and first aid kit at assembly.

Safety Notes

  1. Competitors should plan for the weather and dress accordingly.
  2. We would recommend carrying a whistle. Due to the exposed terrain, participants on Green/Short Green courses may be required to carry a hooded waterproof jacket if the forecast is poor.
  3. As ever, this is orienteering and you may encounter many natural obstacles and difficult terrain on your run. All courses have been planned to avoid the worst of this and any dangerous features. Do please take care as the area does have a number of crags and steep ground. If you do find yourself heading toward steep ground, double check the map as there could well be an easier route.
  4. Ticks may be present in the area, it is recommended that participants check for these after your run.
