FVO Night Series
Night Events run on a regular basis through the dark winter nights.
The events will provide some great orienteering and merit top billing in your diary! There will be three courses provided - a longer TD5 course, a TD5 short course, and an easier Orange/Light Green course (where possible). The easier course is intended for people who have some day orienteering experience and who wish to try night orienteering, however remember that even Orange courses are more difficult at night-time! The courses may be gaffled to provide additional challenge.
Juniors (those who have not had their 16th birthday) may not compete independently of an adult in Night races unless (a) they have successfully completed three daytime races at TD5 standard, and (b) they have successfully completed two Night races with an experienced shadow, at either Long or Short level (novice courses don't count). The Night series co-ordinator will be able to advise which juniors are included in this.
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Directions & Parking
Please approach from the East only. The entry point to the car park is on the B816, Tamfourhill Road. Follow signs for the Falkirk Wheel from Glenfuir Road, Falkirk.
Start/Finish/Download will all be adjacent to the top car park on the left as you approach the Visitor Centre. The Canal Trust charge £4 for parking so do try to lift-share, if you weren't doing so already! It's a ticketless ANPR system with pay points at the Visitor Centre.
Otherwise it's a 3km jog/cycle along the canal from Falkirk High train station with an option to turn off onto Lime Road and avoid the tunnel.
Map & Terrain
All maps are single-sided A4 1:7,500 scale, 5 m contours; mapped in 2024 by Alastair Pedley.
There are several new temporary structures in the vicinity of control 188 which is the common control of a butterfly loop. These structures are not mapped but should not impede your ability to find the control.

Take care crossing walls as there may be barbed wire fences running alongside. The long course has the option to run straight through a large marshy area - this is crossable, but equally can be avoided. Some of the paths can be very slippery if wet/icy - especially any footbridges and the section of towpath towards the end of the course.
There is no need to cross any road or car park on any of the courses.
Dog restrictions
No dogs on courses.
