BOF awards for FVO Quartet

The start of the 2017 Junior Inter-Area relay

31 October, 2017

The final Scottish League fixture of the season at Kenmore saw four young FVO athletes have breakthrough performances, as all four attained landmarks in the British Orienteering incentive scheme.

Ru Flint posted the gold racing standard in the Light Green category, there were bronze racing standard performances for Andrew Twigg and Ben Polwart, and Robin Purves had his third run at Light Green to capture the navigation standard, having recently moved up from Orange.

FVO head coach Nicola Melville explained "The racing challenge is about speed per km over three events at the same level of technical difficulty. For gold, you have to run at 12.5 minutes per kilometre, silver is 15 mins per km, and bronze is 20 minutes per km. The navigation challenge is achieved after competing at three events at a certain level of technical difficulty, with Orange being three stars and Light Green four stars".

Nicola continued "Ru has worked hard on his racing speed recently to achieve the gold standard. It's not just about fitness, it's about navigating fast. Andrew and Ben have done well to make the bronze standard, and if they keep practicing their skills, the speed will come in time. Finally Robin has moved up in class this year, and has shown he can work towards the racing challenges in future".

There are a number of other talented juniors at FVO who are closing in on landmark performances, so the future looks bright for local orienteering.
