International Calls for FVO Five

20 May, 2025

Five FVO athletes are included in the Great Britain teams for the early summer internationals, and their number includes a dramatic recall for a forgotten hero.

The first action of the summer takes place in Sweden, with the opening round of the World Cup, and three forest races, and while Grace and Peter Molloy are expected to be key members of the GB team, the main talking point of the selections is a return to the international fold for Alison Smithard - 19 years after her last national team appearance.

Alison was one of GB's top juniors in her day, with the highlight being a JWOC Long bronze medal in 2004, but a combination of injuries and focus on her academic studies brought her senior career to what appeared to be an premature end, until she got the call that her form in the trial races was to be rewarded with another chance in the spotlight.

James Hammond is included in the team for the Junior World Championships in Italy, where he will celebrate his 19th birthday.  Having won all of the GB trial races, this selection comes as no surprise, but he comes into the championship with two years JWOC experience, and with a silver medal from the Long race at last year's European Junior Championships.

Scarlett Kelly meanwhile, is one of five Scots named in the Under 18 team for this year's European Junior Championship, which will take place in Czechia in July.  Younger sister Esme remains on standby for the championship, as one of the reserve athletes for the Under 16 team.

Full reports and analysis of all the races will appear here, and best wishes to all five from everyone at FVO.
