S6D 5 - Grace (not) Under Pressure
Grace Molloy captured the W18L title at the Scottish 6 Days Orienteering festival with her third gold medal of the week. Grace's winning time of 50.00 was 3 1/2 minutes up on Clyde's Emma Wilson, and with co-leader Fiona Bunn retiring mid course, Grace's points total can't be beaten.
Ewan Purves took the gold in M16B (38.35) and is locked in mortal battle with Irishman Darragh Hoare (CSOA). With the two having equal points going into the final day, it appears that it's a head-to-head for the title.
There was a brace of silvers in the Under 16 A classes, as Peter Molloy (45.00) and Lizzie Stansfield (45.09) maintained their pressure on the top of the leaderboard. Silver too for Rachel Hendrie (W20S - 49.50), Simon Patton (M50S - 47.24), Fiona Hendrie (W55S - 38.30) and Rory Spenceley (M14B - 25.08), all of whom are prominent at the head of their class leaderboards, as well as Campell Spenceley (Yellow - 17.40), his second silver in consecutive days.
Graham Gristwood, having been late to the party, continues to be a thorn in the flesh of the elite men, with another silver medal today in 26.22. Mark Nixon had an off-day today, back in 10th position, but has been consistent all week to retain the silver medal berth overall, while Fanni Gyurkó retains hopes of a medal in the elite womens competition, which has now seen five different race winners.
A fully-fit Will Hensman is a threat in any race, and having finally laid his achilles problems to rest, Will ran strongly today to take the bronze in M35L (57.09) and can stil have a say in who wins the overall title.
Having won two golds in M45S, Steve Nicholson decided to test himself on the long course today and produced an unexpected but thoroughly merited bronze medal performance in 59.24, while Emily Nicholson demonstrated that there is more in her repertoire than merely being a hill-racer by securing her 4th bronze medal of the week in W18S (53.37).
