FVO in Internationals

FVO has a proud record of sending athletes to major international races.

Since Hazel Dean in 1987, a number of athletes with an FVO connection have raced for their country at European Youth, Junior World or World Championship level.  It should be noted that this is a listing of anyone who has raced internationally and been a member of FVO at one time, and not necessarily racing while a member of FVO.

Official JWOC records start in 1990, although there was an unofficial Junior European Championship from 1987, Originally, there was a Long (or Classic) individual race, and a Relay.  A Short race was added in 1991, which changed name to Middle in 2004.  Sprint was added in 2006, and a Mixed Sprint Relay in 2022.  There was no championship in 2020, due to COVID, and in 2021, GB didn't send a team, due to travel restrictions.  In 2022, the event was split into two, due to the risk of forest fires, with the Sprint events in their normal July slot, and the forest races in November.

The European Youth Championships is de-facto the World Championship at Under 16 and and Under 18 levels, although Norway and Sweden don't compete at U16 level.  The first official championship was in 1990, but Great Britain didn't enter until 2001, when there was only a Long distance race and a Relay.  In the early days, GB frequently sent incomplete teams, and the best Under 18s were siphoned off for JWOC.
