SOL & JHI Individual, EdinchipSat 10 Oct

Parking: In Lochearnhead, accessed from the A85 next to the junction with the A84. There will be a £1 charge per car; please bring cash. There are no toilets in the parking field, but there are public toilets in Lochearnhead village, 350m from the parking field.

Public transport: Ember buses stop in Lochearnhead, close to the parking field, on the Edinburgh-Oban and Edinburgh-Fort William routes.

Assembly: In fields on the Edinchip estate. Please follow the taped route (2km) from the parking field, and take care on your way through Lochearnhead, as the route crosses the busy A84. The route is mainly good path and track, apart from one small section of around 100m of rough path, around “Craggan” on the map below. Please follow the taped route through woodland here, rather than the more obvious track.

Start/Finishes: Starts adjacent to Assembly.

Map by Deeside Orienteering and Leisure Maps, 2018. Most recent updates Yotam Bertrand, 2026. Terrain is a mixture of mature woodland and often marshy open, with complex contour detail in places. Longer courses will visit the open moorland valley in the northwest of the area, which has a completely different character to the rest of the area.

Exceptionally, we are offering a colour-coded Long Light Green course at this event. This is the same course run by the M14 and W14 classes at the Junior Home International. It offers participants the opportunity to try a longer course at Technical Difficulty 4 (more challenging than Long Orange; less challenging than Green; similar length to both).  It is not a standard SOL course and is not eligible for SOL points.

Controls are SIAC-enabled, except for the finish, which must be punched.

There are two separate finishes. The White, Yellow, Orange, Long Orange, and Light Green courses finish north of Assembly, while all other courses (including all JHI courses) finish south of Assembly. Both finishes are very close to Assembly.

For the SOL, entries are via sientries, and will close on 4th October. Entries for the JHI are being handled separately.

The earliest start block is reserved for the JHI (10:30-12:00). Accordingly, the SOL start window will be slightly later than usual (12:15-14:15). Courses close provisionally 16:00.

The start procedure is slightly atypical:

• -4 mins: callup
• -3 mins: control descriptions
• -2 mins: blank maps
• -1 min: pick up your rolled up and sealed map, check that you have the correct map (the course name will be visible), and then hold the map by your side.
• 0 mins: punch the punching start box, unseal and open your map and then off you go!

First aid and portaloos at Assembly, along with string course, and a ScotJOS cake stall :-)

• A comprehensive risk assessment has been carried out by the Organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
• Depending on conditions on the day of the event, whistles and/or cagoules may be compulsory. In case of dangerous weather, the event may have to be called off.
• There is a river gorge in the centre of the area. The gorge is only to be crossed at the bridges. It is marked as OOB and it’s never on a sensible route!
• There is an area of waste farming material consisting largely of old fencing wire. This will be taped off using yellow and black tape.
• Other bits of old fence and wire on the area will also be taped where we discover them. Please take care to avoid these hazards when running.
• The longest courses cross a burn in the glen to the northwest of the area. If the burn is in spate and cannot be safely crossed, it may be necessary to shorten these courses or transfer competitors to a shorter course. Any such decisions will be clearly communicated at the event.
• Edinchip is a working sheep farm and even though on the competition day the sheep will be managed into areas not crossed by the courses, many areas, including those used for assembly, string and starts are actively used by sheep. Appropriate hygiene precautions should be adopted.
• All competitors will cross the Edinchip estate road once or twice. It is a very quiet road. “Caution runners” warning signs will be out, but please take care to look both ways before you cross.
• Participants should note that ticks are present on the estate, and everyone should be aware of the risk of tick bites. Please check for ticks after your run.
• A first aid post, manned by volunteers from Killin Mountain Rescue, will be present in the assembly field adjacent to Registration.
• The nearest hospital with A&E capability is either Perth or Larbert, both of which are a 1-hour drive from the competition area. The minor injuries unit in Stirling Community Hospital is slightly closer.
