FVO Night Series
Night Events run on a regular basis through the dark winter nights.
The events will provide some great orienteering and merit top billing in your diary! There will be three courses provided - a longer TD5 course, a TD5 short course, and an easier Orange/Light Green course (where possible). The easier course is intended for people who have some day orienteering experience and who wish to try night orienteering, however remember that even Orange courses are more difficult at night-time! The courses may be gaffled to provide additional challenge.
Juniors (those who have not had their 16th birthday) may not compete independently of an adult in Night races unless (a) they have successfully completed three daytime races at TD5 standard, and (b) they have successfully completed two Night races with an experienced shadow, at either Long or Short level (novice courses don't count). The Night series co-ordinator will be able to advise which juniors are included in this.
Local event
Local events are competitive but low key and in the 'localised' area, often on a Wednesday evening or a weekend morning. Try O events are local events tailored to anyone new to the sport, with coaches on hand for advice and tips. Open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels, learn to use a map and compass to navigate round short courses.
Training events are non-competitive and used for training and coaching. These are aimed at members of the club, but non-members and newcomers are also welcome. Social events are non-orienteering activities, with the annual highlight being our Awards Evening and ceilidh!
Regional events attract participants from around the local region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, and Major events are large competitions such as a British Championships or the JK.

Map & Terrain
1:7500, 5m contour intervals, ISOM 2017-2, original survey and cartography Chris Smithard, 2019.
Mixed woodland, mostly pretty runnable, some quite rough open areas, lots of nettles, the worst of which are shown with a green screen. Older windblow is well mapped, although there are a couple of more recent unmarked windblown areas. The courses have been shortened to avoid a couple of places where flooding from recent heavy rain had impacted control sites and optimal routes. The courses have been planned to avoid uncrossable marshes, don’t be tempted to try and cross them!
As a result of the rain the ditches are full and we haven’t tested how deep so be wary about stepping in them and for all straight-line routes going across these ditches, there will be possible routes around them as well.
On the western half of the map the terrain underneath the mapped powerlines has all been cleared to rough open instead of the mapped white forest which has NOT been updated on to the map so it will look different to what you will expect.
Course Information
- Long: 4.6km, 45m, 16 controls
- Short: 3.3km, 25m, 13 controls
- Novice: 2km, 20m, 7 controls
Courses are slightly shorter than usual because part of the area is too wet for orienteering. Who knew there was such a thing?!
